Parma Heights enrolls in the Heritage Home program for residents who wish to renovate and repair homes


PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio – Four years after being last enrolled in the Cleveland Restoration Society’s Heritage Home program, Parma Heights recently joined the nonprofit preservation organization’s annual offering.

“What we started to notice last year is the growing number of residents coming in and applying for permits,” said Mayor Michael P. Byrne. “This program is invaluable to someone looking to do any type of renovation in their home. They can get free advice.

“We have about 6,000 houses that were built in the early 1960s. So for a small registration fee, that made sense,” he said.

The Heritage Home program is currently working with residents of 38 communities in Cuyahoga County and surrounding counties. Eligible homes – single-family, two- or three-family – must be over 50 years of age.

“Residents of Parma Heights, as well as residents of one of our participating communities, have access to the technical resources of the Heritage Home program and a low-interest loan,” said Thomas A. Jorgensen, director of the operation of the Cleveland Restoration Society.

“Our technical resources include free advice and guidance on home repair and renovation projects, help finding contractors, reviewing quotes, and helping with choosing exterior colors.

“The Heritage Home Program Loan is another resource available to homeowners. It is a low interest rate loan that can be used for most home repair and renovation projects, indoors or out. “

Parma Heights construction, housing and recycling coordinator Michelle Teresi said the city is providing $ 5,300 for residents to participate in the Heritage Home program.

Parma Heights was previously affiliated with the Heritage Home Program. From 2013 to 2017, there were 422 requests for technical assistance, including 15 requests for low interest loans.

“During that time, we’ve helped 172 Parma Heights owners with our technical support, site visits, contractor research and color consultations,” Jorgensen said. “We also facilitated four Heritage Home loan projects.

Residents can apply for a loan from participating Key Bank or Third Federal banks, as well as directly through the Heritage Home Program.

“It was mostly popular with the residents, who seemed to really like it,” Teresi said. “Many residents have used free and free technical assistance for information purposes. Since the publication of the recent mayor’s bulletin, we have been very interested.

“We are very excited. We believe this is a wonderful opportunity for our residents to receive this expert technical assistance regarding their exterior and interior improvements and to generally preserve the beauty of their housing stock in our community.
