Abbott says Texas will bus migrants to DC after Biden lifts Title 42
Texas Governor Greg Abbott (right) announced on Wednesday that the state would send migrants who cross the border illegally to Washington, DC, in response to the Biden administration’s lifting of Title 42.
Title 42 is a public health measure that can be deployed to block asylum claims or deport migrants due to the risk of contagion. The policy was implemented during the Trump presidency due to the coronavirus pandemic and continued when President Biden took office, with the Biden administration recently announcing it would be lifted next month.
Abbott said Texas would implement several measures to deter border crossings in response, the number of governor warnings at the border would rise sharply.
One of the ways Abbott says he plans to deport migrants from Texas is to send them to the nation’s capital.
“To help local authorities whose communities are overwhelmed by hordes of illegal immigrants who are dropped off by the Biden administration, Texas is providing charter buses to send these illegal immigrants who have been dropped off by the Biden administration to Washington, D.C. DC,” says Abbott.
Texas Emergency Management Division Chief Nim Kidd will be responsible for the program.
Kidd said at the press conference that his agency will begin the plans laid out by the governor on Thursday and “will use as many buses as necessary to follow the governor’s instructions to accomplish this.”
Kidd said the department has used 900 buses for its operations in the past, while Abbott reiterated that the first bus will go to Washington, DC.
Other measures announced by Abbott on Wednesday include “enhanced security inspection of vehicles” crossing the border to combat cartels, illegal drugs and smuggling.
Texas will also set up boat blockades in the Rio Grande, install barbed wire in areas of the river frequently crossed by migrants and border lights in areas known for smuggling, and the National Guard “will begin the first phase mass migration repeats,” Abbott said.
Since Biden took office, Title 42 has been used 1.7 million times to deport migrants, including some repeat smugglers.
Republicans opposed lifting Title 42, echoing Abbott’s concern that the border would be flooded with migrants.
However, many Democrats celebrated the decision, with some party members saying it should have been done sooner.
